Special Collaboration Notebook with Tammy Nguyen + Pigeon Passenger Press

Stories – March 2021

"At Passenger Pigeon Press, we love poetry. We love the poetry of KAAREM’s garments, and we try to find poetic relationships across fields and time." - Tammy Nguyen

Now available for purchase on kaarem.com and at Que in Saigon.

  1. Tammy Nguyen x Passenger Pigeon Press x Kaarem Notebook with a Vietnamese School Pen

This limited edition notebook is our special collaboration with artist Tammy Nguyen and Passenger Pigeon Press. Inspired by KAAREM’s use of materials, and attention to craft and structure, Tammy created a book composed of one signature and two pocket matrixes. The transparent colored and middle folios are created by folding in asymmetrical and symmetrical ways that provide spaces for your safekeeps, thoughts, and what-nots. This notebook is also assembled with a singular string tied at two spots. This allows the pages to stay together while also creating a hook for a writing utensil.

On the back of this paper is a poem that is a little bit about folds and a little bit about dreams by Harlem Renaissance poet Georgia Douglass Johnson. Ms. Johnson worked for most of her life in Washington DC, but is considered part of the artistic movement that stemmed out of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City. Passenger Pigeon Press operates out of Harlem, but they like to think of our ideas as having no fixed location.

My Little Dreams
BY GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON

I’m folding up my little dreams
Within my heart tonight,
And praying I may soon forget
The torture of their sight.

For time’s deft fingers scroll my brow
With fell relentless art—
I’m folding up my little dreams
Tonight, within my heart.

from The Heart of a Woman and Other Poems (The Cornhill Company, 1918)

About Tammy Nguyen

Tammy Nguyen is a multimedia artist whose work spans painting, drawing, printmaking and book making. Intersecting geopolitical realities with fiction, her practice addresses lesser-known histories through a blend of myth and visual narrative. She is the founder of Passenger Pigeon Press, an independent press that joins the work of scientists, journalists, creative writers, and artists to create politically nuanced and cross-disciplinary projects.

Born in San Francisco, Nguyen received a BFA from Cooper Union in 2007.
